Keep the Fun Going: Root it!
It's easy to root small cuttings from big or overgrown plants. Just snip, strip, and soak!
Did you take cuttings from the coleus, begonias, or other plants this summer? By now, they should have a good fringe of white roots. That means it’s time to pot them up! Use decorative pots and turn them into holiday gifts! Use potting mix, not garden soil – yard soil is too heavy for tender new roots. Be careful not to break roots; the best way to plant cuttings is to hold the stem in an empty pot and scoop the potting mix around them.
Shade-loving plants will do fine by a sunny window all winter – sun lovers will need a grow light. When you start to see new growth, cut back the plants to get them to branch out instead of growing tall and spindly.
