KNOW YOUR PLANTING ZONE

The U.S. Department of Agriculture developed a plant hardiness map to help gardeners know which plants will thrive in their areas. This is important if you want to plant something that will grow year-round. For example, a shrub, tree, or perennial.

Use your ZIP Code to find your zone then look for the zone information on plant tags.

KNOW YOUR FROST DATES

Not all plants can withstand cold temperatures. If you live in an area that gets frost, you’ll want to wait for the last frost date before putting tender annuals into a planter. If you plan to start flowers or vegetables from seed, knowing the last frost date will help you know when to plant indoors. Check seed packets for more information.

The Old Farmers’ Almanac is a helpful resource. Enter your ZIP Code to get information for your location.

KNOW WHEN TO START VEGGIE SEEDS

Some vegetable seeds go straight into the soil when the weather is right. Some vegetables need a longer growing season and can be started indoors.

How do you know when to plant your favorites? The Old Farmer’s Almanac has a guide for starting seeds indoors, transplanting them outdoors, and sewing seeds straight into your planters. Use your ZIP Code to get the information for your location.
