Care Tips for Potted Evergreens

Water

Trees in the landscape don’t need much care in the winter. But trees in outside pots require watering if the temperature is above freezing. Poke a finger into the soil about once a week – if it feels dry, water. If it’s frozen hard, don’t water! During a warm spell, check for dryness more often. Water early in the day so excess water can drain before it freezes at night.

Reducing Stress

Keep all planters off paved surfaces. Concrete and asphalt will heat and cool rapidly from day to evening and stress the tree roots. Place your planter on soil, if possible. Improve drainage by propping the pot on rocks, bricks, or pot feet and be sure not to block the drainage holes. Help prevent stress by protecting potted trees from the wind and full sun in winter. You do not need to fertilize potted trees until spring.
